Botanical gardens working together

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is a plant conservation charity based in Kew, London, England. It is a membership organisation, founded in 1987, working with 800 botanic gardens in 118 countries, whose combined work forms the world’s largest plant conservation network. Dedicated to plant conservation and environmental education, the charity works to support and promote the activities of its member gardens. Its official stated mission is to “mobilise botanic gardens and engage partners in securing plant diversity for the well-being of people and planet.”

On national level the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is an active member of the NVBT (Nederlandse Vereniging van Botanische Tuinen). The NVBT is a collaboration between 25 members, Dutch botanic gardens, arboreta, and zoos, who work together in plant conservation and environmental education. The office of the NVBT works to support and promote the activities of its member gardens.

Museums working together

Over 50 Museums in Amsterdam work together to represents their collective business interests (SAM). The organisation has existed since the eighties but it was formally founded in 1994. The organization contains both private and public museums, all of which are registered as members of the Dutch Museum Association.

They come together in several meeting groups to discuss their interests, enhance their efficiency, and improve their positions. The different meeting groups represents different aspects of the company, like MOAM (the marketing group), EOAM (the education group), and e-OAM (a platform to learn from each other and improve online communication strategies).

Partners in crime

The Hortus is an inspirational place for many.  The stories of our plants, their shapes and colours, and mostly the scientific background, often form a base for new ideas, new products, and fruitful collaborations. The Hortus supports the creative entrepreneurship, often in the role of content creator and botanic expert.

The Jakarta hotel is Amsterdams newest and most sustainable hotel, situated near the Central Station. The Hortus helped with the selection and design of its impressive indoor tropical garden.

Stichting NL Bloeit! is a Dutch organisation that strives to create a sustainable environment for plants, animals and people. It does so by creating and maintaining wild flower pastures and designated areas in the Netherlands. Nl Bloeit! is a partner in the creation of our Dutch wildflower bed (along the waterside behind the Greenhouse). Seeds used for this bed are from Cruydt-Hoeck Wilde bloemenzaden.

The Hortus supports the Econasium, a secondary school in West Amsterdam, with the creation of an in-school greenhouse for educational purposes, and with the development of educational programs for the school to use.

Sprinklr is Dutch start-up for ecological garden and house plants. Their mission is to create a house plant industry that is free of poison and pesticides. In 2017, we created a Hortus houseplant collection together. We also collaborate in buying and transporting plants from the ecological farm of Kwekerij Casper Verhoeven.

In the summer of 2017, artist and illustrator Joost Stokhof lived and slept for a week in the garden. He received several artists with whom he let himself get inspired by our collection. He drew his experiences out in a diary and made a vinyl album of the music made by the artists.

Willems Wermoed is the first Dutch vermouth, created by Selier Spirits of Paul Selier in Amsterdam. The vermouth contains 24 plant extracts which are inspired by the collection of the Hortus.
